This is an interesting local piece. It is a spessartine garnet on schorl tourmaline which was collected in 1975. It was collected from a new road being put into a small housing development north of route 273 at the Appleton road intersection in Elkton, Maryland. A number of boulders of quartz from the core zone of a small pegmatite had been plowed up. Embedded in the boulders of quartz were crystals of feldspar and tourmaline which had grown into the quartz during crystallization of the pegmatite.
