Landscapes and Gardens:
The Photography of Gottlieb Hampfler

May 10 - July 12, 1996

Mr. Hampfler was the staff photographer for Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania from 1955 until his retirement in 1975. Originally hired by Pierre S. du Pont in 1934 as a horticulturist, his passion for photography led him into free-lance work in 1938, producing images of individual flowers, area gardens, and many views of the varied landscape of the Brandywine Valley. Mr. Hampfler has been president of numerous camera clubs, has lectured extensively, and has received several awards including the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society's Certificate of Merit in 1993.
Landscapes and Gardens was an academic project of the Temporary and Economical Exhibits class in the Museum Studies Program at the University of Delaware. This Certificate Program offers graduate students from various disciplines the opportunity to gain knowledge and experience in the museum field.

This program was made possible through the generous support of the University Gallery and the University of Delaware's Museum Studies Program, in cooperation with the Longwood Graduate Program and Longwood Gardens.
