The Learning Tradition:
Selections from the University Gallery Collections

September 11 - December 14, 2001

The University Gallery is a teaching museum and its collections have been used extensively for several decades in instructing students in art historical research, artistic techniques, and in the standards and practices of the museum profession. This exhibition highlights some of the major works in the collection by such artists as Mary Cassatt, Pablo Picasso, Auguste Rodin, Aristide Maillol, Ansel Adams, and Gertrude Käsebier. The collection has been developed over time through the generosity of many friends of the University of Delaware, and this exhibition acknowledges their important role in supporting undergraduate and graduate education.
The exhibition also focuses on the contributions of pioneering art and art history faculty like Harriet Bailey, Margaret Allen, William Homer, and Wayne Craven, who were instrumental in securing collections and teaching with art in their classrooms. Students enrolled in the University Gallery’s Curatorial Apprenticeship Program assisted in the development of this exhibition.
