Middleton Manigault
VISIONARY MODERNIST

September 5 - November 10, 2002

When Middleton Manigault (1887-1922) starved himself to death at the age of thirty-five in an apparent attempt to “see colors not perceptible to the physical eye,” he ended a brief but distinguished career as an acclaimed Modernist.

Middleton Manigault, Visionary Modernist
is the first major retrospective exhibition of work by this neglected master. Featuring approximately fifty objects, including oil paintings, watercolors, pastels, etchings, sculptures, and ceramics, it offers a much deserved survey and appraisal of the artist’s career.

Curated by Beth Venn, noted Manigault scholar and former curator of the permanent collection at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the exhibition was organized by the Columbus Museum of Art in cooperation with Hollis Taggart Galleries, New York.
